Why We Travel
My wife and I think of ourselves as travelers not tourists. Though we do enjoy visiting “must see” sights in the places we visit, we do not have a checklist we must check off. We enjoy being someplace different, meeting and chatting with people, trying out the unique food of a region, and just living in a place we’re visiting. Fortunately, our granddaughters seem to share this approach with us, though, for them, shopping is an important addition to the list.
Our home in week #1: More Quarters, Nicol Street, Cape Town
After three days to reach Cape Town we spent our first day there resting then exploring the neighborhood that would be our home for the next week. Anya (@pemburytours; #pemburytours) had made all the arrangements for the four different places we would stay during our trip and More Quarters Hotel on Nicol Street right of Kloof Street in the Gardens district of Cape Town was the first. We had a lovely suite with a bedroom, bath, and sitting room with a kitchenette and the girls each had their own suites identical to ours.

We went for an early dinner and decided on DaVincis because it was only a few hundred yards away. The restaurant was almost empty. We would see this often over our three week stay. South African businesses, especially hotels and restaurants, are hungry for patrons. Low numbers of travelers was also due to the season, winter, not just the pandemic. We were seated and ready to enjoy our first meal in Cape Town. Sulu was our waiter (“Sulu like Zulu,” he told us.) and Benizia was our greeter and bartender. We would see them often over the next week as DaVincis became our “neighborhood bar!”
