This 15-hour, 5-session, hands-on, sketching and painting class is offered with the first six hours done in a classroom and the remaining nine hours done on-location in local Lynchburg parks and street locations. In the first two 3-hour classroom sessions we will go over topics such as needed art materials as well as additional things needed when working on location, drawing in perspective, analyzing a scene to decide how to start sketching, and mixing paint. In each classroom session we will all work on a sketch/painting from a reference photo. There will be two on-your-own sketching assignments between these sessions.
Session 3 will be held in Riverside Park off Rivermont Avenue and last three hours. The spacious grounds and structures will provide us with several different subjects for sketching. And, since the scariest thing about sketching on-location is working with people walking by and observing you, the park will have us in “public” but separated from casual observers. It will ease you into working in public! We will all do one sketch together of the same subject, share our results with a traditional “sketchbook throw-down,” then everyone will select a second scene of his/her choice to sketch and paint if time permits.
Easing into more public spaces, we will meet by the Rivermont Post Office for our next, 3-hour long Session #4. Everyone will select what he/she wants to sketch and paint for this session then share his/her results before we conclude the session. As in Session #3, I will circulate to answer questions and make suggestions.
For our final session, we will meet at the Lynchburg Community Market fountain, to experience true on-location sketching in a very public place! We will first discuss any questions then decide what we each want to sketch. We will then set ourselves up on the sidewalks in that part of Main Street, and spend three hours doing a sketch/painting of our choice. As always, I’ll be available for questions and before departing, we will all gather for our final class “sketchbook throw down.”
All participants are responsible to equip themselves with something to sit on, drinking water, sunscreen, bug spray (if necessary), paper towels or rag, and coats if necessary.
Each participant is responsible for supplying his/her own art supplies.
Sketchbook - preferably one with 140 lb/300 g/m² weight watercolor paper with a size of around 5” x 7”. (Typically, sketchbooks are 5” x 8” or something like that and that’s fine. Get the size you want to use. I tend toward smaller so 5” x 7” or 8” is my preference.)
#2 Pencil or drawing pencil with HD lead OR a mechanical pencil with .5 lead.
Extra lead or a pencil sharpener.
An eraser, preferably a kneadable eraser (available at Michael’s or Amazon).
A fine line, permanent (black) ink pen, such as a Pigma Micron 01 or 05 pen (preferably both).
One or two standard round waterbrushes, such as the “Pentel - Aquash Water Brush Medium Point & Small Point 2 Pens Profesional Arts Value Set” available through Amazon.
A small and simple palette of watercolor paints with at least pans of yellow, red, and blue. For this class brands and specific color names don’t matter.
Some office clips to hold your sketchbook pages down if windy.
Some type of portable chair will be needed for sessions 3 through 5.
If you choose to use regular watercolor brushes, you will need a container for water and a bottle of water.
