My artistic interest is in the area of sketching outdoor, typically urban, scenes. I use pencil and ink in a sketchbook and then I apply watercolor paints. I enjoy this process very much but recently have discovered that, though the experience is different, I can get very similar results using the app Procreate with my iPad and Apple Pencil. The additional beauty of this approach is I can create art anywhere without having to deal with having water and paint! In this three-part, online course we will explore the options for sketching on an iPad using the Procreate drawing app.
I designed this class to help others who either have Pencil-capable iPads (**see list below) or are considering the purchase of one and want to learn to do ink sketches with watercolor paintings on them. The class activities, therefore, are focused on your achieving that goal. You will download my template that has a watercolor paper texture and I will go over the different layers I’ve included for different painting aspects (e.g., inking, shading, foliage painting, buildings, etc.). You will download a set of default Procreate brushes I have identified as useful for working on inking and watercolor painting. We will spend time learning how to adjust the size and intensity of the brushes and you will also learn how to create your own custom palette of paint colors using a class palette swatch you download as a starting point.
Once all of your tools are set up, we will explore the Procreate interface and I will show you the features I find I use for every painting I do. Initially I provide you with two canvases with completed sketches so we can move right to painting the sketch together. By working on the same sketch subject, we can discuss what we’’re doing and why. You can ask questions in the moment and get answers and suggestions from other class participants and me. With these two hands-on painting activities you will learn how I separate out elements in my sketches on different layers to facilitate the painting process. For our final project we will do a complete sketch & painting together so that using this wonderful app is is second nature to you!
This 6-hour class spread over three 2-hour sessions is not an in-depth, intensive course on the Procreate app. Rather, it is an introduction to essential features of the app you need to understand to begin creating ink sketches with watercolor added in your own style. However, you will learn about the menu and tool options available in the app and how to use them. We will cover such things as cutting, copying, pasting, and resizing elements of your sketches, as well as how to use the eight brushes selected for our class brush set. We will practice gesture controls and you will learn how to manage your projects through stacks and the backing up of canvases, brushes, and palettes. Classes will be synchronous (i.e., “live”) and limited to six participants so you will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions as we all work together. Though I will, naturally, do presentations, they will be short and interactive, making your learning experience very hands-on!
You will download and install a class brush set consisting of eight built-in Procreate brushes. You will learn how to use them to create ink sketches and learn what watercolor effects you can create using them.In addition, I have put together a class starter palette with swatches of basic paint colors. Along with the class brush set, the class template file, an activity file, and the PDF handouts, you will download this palette before our first class meeting. You will add to this palette to create your own personal, custom color palette. I provide you with all of these resources so you don’t have to search for them or create them yourself! All you need is an Apple Pencil supporting iPad, a good Internet connection, and the desire to become more proficient with this extremely robust digital drawing program!
Classes will be limited to six participants and I will offer two sections, one during the week and one on the weekend. The cost is US $70 (Canada, $90, Euro €57, and South African Rand 1,000) approximately) for six hours of online, hands-on instruction, a class brush set, a canvas template with layers, several canvases we’ll use for in-class activities, and a basic color palette. Handouts are provided as downloadable PDFs. Access to a private Facebook group is provided where participants can share their work and ask questions of me and other participants.
To take full advantage of the iPad’s ability to mimic sketching with a real ink pen and painting and if cost is a concern, I recommend participants have either the 7th or 8th generation, 10.2 iPad ($329) with an Apple Pencil 1 or any of the iPad Pro models with corresponding Apple Pencil (#1 or #2). I also recommend getting the largest amount of storage space you can afford.
**Note: Which iPads work with either the Apple Pencil 1 or Pencil 2? All the iPad Pros, the 3rd & 4th generation iPad Airs, the 9.7” 6th generation iPad, the 7.9” 5th generation iPad Mini, and the 7th & 8th generation 10.2” iPads. Be sure to purchase the Pencil model that works with the iPad you purchase! Check Apple support page for complete list: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211029.
