It is so much fun to see how you can change the presentation of a subject just by adding a flash. Here is a side-by-side of the same subject - a plant in our backyard garden. The first image is shot normally, no flash. This is how I captured it using just available light. I then dialed my camera to its flash sync speed of 1/250 second, kept same aperture as before (f/8), and dialed my ISO from 400 to 100. I had my flash on my "flash stick" (http://www.infotor.com/blog/category/flash-stick/) and had it on Manual with a power setting of 1/4 and took the shot. The image on the right is the result.
Making those setting changes and using the flash all darkened the background and added, IMO, some drama to the image. What do you think?
